Yes, it was the hungry caterpillar’s 40th birthday yesterday. I first encountered this book when I was 5. It was still one of the biggest children’s books of the time and yet at this point it had already been published for 10 years. Now, nearly 30 million copies later, this iconic children’s book is still as popular with children and I remember it very well. Eric Carle, the creator, certainly made a mark in literary history with such a simple story and beautiful illustration. Now, 40 years later I am reading the story to my 4 year old son and he loves the book as much as I did.  I just wonder if the caterpillar is still hungry this morning.  I am sure he didn’t go short of cake yesterday.

I thought I would let my son sum this article up and this is what he said :  ”I liked it when the caterpillar changed into a beautiful butterfly”.   Yep, and so did I.
